Firefox 3: Dislike #1

Have you heard about Firefox 3 from the news or your friend’s blog? I bet you have.

Following the hype about Firefox 3 Download Day, I tried Firefox 3 on its release date and was pretty much disappointed by series of crashes. I dumped Firefox 3 shortly after the repeated crashes and chose to stick to my browser of choice: Safari.

To sum up my experience, there are three things I like about Firefox 3, and three things I dislike.

Let’s start with my first dislike, which is also the first thing I saw: browser chrome.

Firefox 3 default browser chrome

Compare that with my Safari:

My clean and neat Safari

Seeing such big difference urged me to trim unnecessary stuff from Firefox 3 default toolbars. The rule is simple:

  1. Analyze every single item in browser chrome. It must have a good reason to be there.
  2. No good reason? Remove it.

There are stuff I don’t need but cannot be removed via Customize menu. This is where extensions like Stylish and Hide Menubar play a big part to trim it even more.

Anyway, the weird-looking back button reminds me of recent Microsoft’s products. I’m wondering why Mozilla is following into that direction…

Attack of the Orbs!

Back button remedy: set toolbar customization to “Small icons”.
I was pretty pleased with the final looks of my simplified Firefox 3:

Firefox 3, simplified.

That’s my first dislike, and it’s partially solved. Firefox looks so much better, clean, and neat now! Sweet!
Two more dislikes and three likes in the next blog posts! ;)

I wanted to try also. But, right now my mozilla is Firefox/2.0.0.14 is good enough for me. I dare not to take the risk. Maybe, should wait until they release more stable version. I’ve added you on my twitter as well.

Hello Reena!

I found an application which allows multiple version of Firefox installed in a single computer. I can’t find it in my browsing history. hehe..
I’ll post it when I find it later :)
Thanks for dropping by~
Anyway.. your blog is interesting! I love those inspirational quotes!

Chris!

You talked about BACK button. :D
I think it’s because Firefox 3 introduced something called ??close system integration?? with native look-and-feel…?

Well, Safari does rock. Opera, too. ;)
Good Luck~

Hello ThantZin!

Yeah! It’s the back button! Looks very Vista, huh? Vista users will feel like home when using Firefox 3, but I’m still in XP. hahaha..

I can’t agree more; Safari and Opera are equally good! Of course there are certain features in one browser but not in the others.
Bottom line: Pick any one of these good browsers: Firefox, Opera, or Safari. IE 8 still has series of milestones to barely pass the line. hahaha..
