We are kicking this off in 11 countries/regions, giving DreamSpark to millions of students in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Belgium. If you are not residing in one of the countries listed keep checking back, we will be adding more countries throughout the year.

Does that mean that I might not get in?
Possibly, if you are not residing in one of the countries listed, not attending an accredited university or not a member of one of the student organizations that we’re connected with. But keep checking back, as we’re working on adding more ways to verify your student status all the time.

Kitchen Sink

My friend posted a tweet about an interesting XML stuff at http://www.mozilla.org/docs/web-developer/samples/kitchensink.xml

kitchensinkup0 Kitchen Sink

Visit the website and see yourself how the ‘water’ flows… It’s not flash movie, not an animated picture. It’s just text (XML). Every geek should agree that this XML is very interesting emoticon smile Kitchen Sink

If you can’t see the animation properly, please use modern browsers like Firefox, Safari, or Opera. Enjoy!

Web Hosting

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I am looking for a new web hosting service to keep my files and host this blog. My current web hosting service provider isn’t up to the standard.

Well, who can expect much from an extremely cheap web hosting service?

I think these months are the right time to make a move to a better web hosting service which is still under Budget Web Hosting category. I found Web Hosting Buzz after googling for a while and compared a dozen of web hosting services out there. I narrowed down my choices with several criteria such as price, reliability, and technical support. There were still a few in my list until I decided the final one because of this unique reason: Carbon Neutral Hosting.

So… yeah, i have decided to take that. emoticon smile Web Hosting I’ll post the announcement when I get my new web hosting+domain. Hehe…

Charge an iPod with an Onion

This is a very interesting video. I found this article and video from another website and there’s nobody else that I know, other than this video’s author, does charge his iPod successfully with an electrolytes-submerged onion. I won’t try this too on my iPod’s USB cable; Can’t imagine having onion layers stuffed beneath my USB plug and smells like onions. :S

It doesn’t take much to charge 15-20 minutes of your iPod; just two cups of Gatorade, an onion, and a screwdriver to make a hole through the onion to boost the chemical reaction process. Maybe our friends from School of Chemical and Life Sciences can explain us how an onion can provides electricity.

Oh yes, this electronion might be a new object in the center of attention for friends in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering who are hotly debating about green technology.

Time Machine

You might have probably heard about Time Machine, one of big features in the latest version of Mac OS. It automagically backs up everything in your disk in hourly basis, 24×7, without choking full your external disk. It pauses its activity when you put the computer to sleep and picks up where it left when the computer is awake. Whenever you need to find missing files, summon the time machine and you’ll see the time machine in action. In a snazzy nebula view, time machine can bring you back to various previous states of directory, file, photo album, address book, you name it. All these in a highly usable and cool eye-candied outer space.
Well done, Apple!

timemachine Time Machine

Some questions related to time machine floats around the net. Most of them are answered from the official website, some others are discussed in the blogosphere like this blog.

Here’s one of the questions listed in the blog mentioned above.

Giz: Can you override Time Machine to seriously delete stuff you never want to see again?
Apple: In the “starfield” view you have an option: “Delete all backup versions of this file.” If you do that, you will never see it again. Also, you can select things you don’t want to be picked up by Time Machine. You can affect the scope, and specify areas you don’t want to cover.

How It Works: Google Maps

My previous post about Google Map and its street view leads to a simple question: ‘How does GoogleMaps–and GoogleEarth too–take the entire earth and allow us to see big cities in street-view with such great details?’

I found this article, explaining how Google maps the world and let us fly around and see what people are doing on the street.

mappingtheworld How It Works: Google Maps

I’m wondering how big is their storage to keep those map pieces. It’s surely a humongous database with smart algorithm to retrieve the correct map pieces and combine them together at a blink of eye. Web applications are getting more powerful than ever, peeps!

Google Maps’ Street View

Take a look at GoogleMaps and visit big cities like New York or San Francisco. See the entire city and keep zooming in, ‘flying’ low in bird-view of skyscrapers, apartments, parks, traffic, cars, people, and more. Switch to street view and you can see all things around you, as if you’re there.

Does this sound scary? Take a look at how a man is captured in street view while picking his nose (poor him!) or see other fifteen famous street view showing headless man, sunbathing babes, burglar, ET, and more.

googlemapstreetview Google Maps’ Street View

It’s so controversial how those people have their online identities protected by privacy statements while on the other hand their actions are (unluckily) captured and seen by people on the other side of the world. I hope nobody recognizes the real peeps of strip club man, the adult bookstore guy, the picking-nose man, or the sunbathing babes.

Internship and Vic

A so-so post about my days

Internship is very typical and regular, monday to friday, nine to six, staring computer screen with dry eyes and swinging mood; sudden dip when discovering bugs and problems, sudden peak when realizing lunch break or SixPM is around the corner.

I left my Vic at home muted with its screen set off and control it remotely from office’s computer whenever I need it. Uploading files, checking e-mail, iCal and Address Book.

Despite of my wild habit ‘feeding’ Vic with dozens of beta apps, this nearly-2-years-old Vic is still very healthy and able to stay up for almost three weeks! This is absolutely the strongest system I’ve ever tried.
