Ads Free Y!Mail

  • en Ads Free Y!Mail

The three webmail giants have been (and are still) competing for years, aiming to be the best free web email provider. The goal was pretty much clear: attract more users, let them receive and send tons of emails. The more emails flowing in and out of their mailbox, the more their ads are displayed… and hence the revenue kicks in.

The latest move (or probably a leap) by Yahoo Mail to an ads-free email environment puzzled me. Yahoo Mail has billions of active email users who don’t even need to worry about space limit. Yahoo Mail is offered free with no space limit and now with no ads. Hmm… So where does the revenue come from? Will ads revenue from search, news, and other Yahoo services good enough to cover operational costs?

Regardless of how Yahoo and the other two internet giants are performing in this difficult financial situation, the fact that they keep the innovation and improvement wheels running on is still of our best interest. After all, it’s the end consumer like us who benefit most.

Yahoo! Mail: Now Ads-Free

FYI: The ads mentioned above refer to graphical and flash-animated advertisement banners that you usually see when browsing and reading your email. My recent outgoing email still include footer promotional message from Yahoo to promote its own email service. Yet, Washington Post reported that the footer one liner ads has gone. Is it possibly only for US Yahoo Mail? Hmm…

Well, at least I won’t see huge banners promoting random stuff from food to lawnmower to partner matching service… which is obviously a good thing!

What’s different in this CAC+US show is that we’re gonna play one traditional song and then followed by a pop song Mamma Mia! This is our first pop song performance this year! Hmm… I think it’s interesting to hear a pop song in a different traditional twist. hehee…

The two songs from Angklung Ensemble is just a small part of twenty cultural performances of live music and dazzling display of diverse dance genre. Here’s the complete list:

Introduction Item by all sub-clubs
This marks the official start of CAC+US’09. Each of the 8 sub-clubs has come together to put up a stunning display of music and dance. Sit back and rock along with us as you listen to the live music performed by the musical sub-clubs ad feast your eyes on the dazzling display of diverse dance genres!

Please Don’t Beat It by Guitar
A mash up of Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ and Rihanna’s ‘Please Don’t Stop The Music’. Look forward to an interesting mash up done with a live band and a technically challenging electric guitar solo originally played by guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen.

Gin Ironoi-Aikawa Nanase by Guitar
In contrast to “Please Don’t Beat It”, experience raw elements of guitar playing in this item. Originally, this piece requires the use of synthesizers, but it will be replaced by an electric guitar and incorporated with the classical guitar in Guitar club’s special arrangement of “Gin Ironoi”.

?????? by Voices
To live, to dream, to brave life’s challenges and to experience life to its fullest forms the main crux of ??????. This is a heavy metal rock song about breaking free from the shackles of mundane life and jetting off to a vibrant brand of lifestyle – so be prepared to rock with its catchy groove.

3-7-21 by Voices
3-7-21, is a jazzy and groovy number that challenges and showcases the vocalists’ wide vocal range. The song emphasises the very essence of producing good music, which is all about fun, creativity and pushing one’s limits.

Bad Boy by Voices
Bad Boy, a groovy and heavily hiphop-flavoured pop song fusing electronic music with a sexy tune, is originally sung by popular South Korean singer Son Dam Bi. Riding on the popularity of the Korean pop music industry, Voices would like to wow the audience with their very own rendition of “Bad Boy” coupled with catchy dance moves, showcasing a wide diversity of music genres.

Satisfy My Soul by Social and Ballroom
The Rumba, often dubbed the ‘Dance of Love’, is a slow, sensuous and romantic dance that often showcases the flirtation and expression of emotions between a couple. Tonight’s performance highlights the lady in particular, as she moves to the rhythmic Latin beat in a seductive dance to attract her man.

A group of busybodies and a squabbling couple cross paths in a park. Does love come a minute too late or do the nosey parkers help love find a second chance?

Merlion Struck by Lightning

This is an unusual news entry in my RSS:

Singapore’s iconic Merlion statue was struck by lightning on Saturday (28 Feb) afternoon during a thunderstorm. Local news radio station 938Live said the Merlion was struck by lightning between 4 and 5PM local time, causing parts of the statue to fall near a group of startled visitors. Luckily nobody was hurt.

The 8.6 meter-tall Merlion has the head of a lion and the body and tail of a fish, and sits at the mouth of the Singapore River near the central business district. The body of the fish represents Singapore’s origins as a fishing village, while the lion head symbolises Singapore’s founding by an Indonesian prince who named his new settlement after a lion he saw when he landed on the island.

If my memory serves me right, there are plenty of tall buildings and trees near the Merlion. I’m wondering how the lightning could strike the statue which is relatively short compared to tall buildings and trees nearby. Hm…

The weather has been pretty extreme in the past few days. It was cool and windy in the morning, bright and sunny in early afternoon, and a couple of hours later the thunderstorm came.

Remember my previous blog post about my new web hosting service? I’m migrating to a new hosting service because the one that I had earlier was substandard. Well, knowing its extremely affordable annual price plan, I should have been mindful of its inferiority. It was a good lesson to learn though…

Behind the name ChrisPra.com
Cutting the story short, I migrated to a new web hosting service and it offered free domain name. There I went to grab chrispra.com as a shorter way to reach chrisprasojo.com
This thought arise when I realize my new friends called my Chris Prasago, Chris Prosaja, Chris Prasajo, and a series of anagrammatized Prasojo.
Believe me, no matter how you look at it, ChrisPra.com is just better.

Both .com name link to this blog at this moment. I’ll use ChrisPra.com for portfolio and other general stuff and use ChrisPrasojo.com for blog (Hello there my friends!).

Fresher wooden layout
As you can see here, my blog sports a new layout which looks similar to my previous layout. Yup, you get it right… I keep the dark wooden wall from my previous blog and photoshopped it a little further to darken the surface and its edges.

This theme isn’t built from scratch, but rather, built on a free WordPress theme with major tweaks which is heavily adapted to my taste.

Dark. Earthy. Woody.
There goes the name of this theme: Kayuku, which literally means “My Wood”.

Do you see what I don’t?
I personally pick a series of font type that comes default in Mac but not in Windows with a reason. Um… Do you think I’m a Mac fanboy who’s trying to widen the gap between Mac and Windows users? Mocking “I’m a Mac, You’re a PC. Haha!” phrase? Nope.

It’s my intention to educate and spread good stuff to everyone, like you, regardless of what kind of computer you’re using. Take a look at the screenshot below (click to enlarge) and compare how this blog suppose to be and how it looks on your screen.

See the difference? Good.
I’m planning to publish a new page for readers to download good stuff. The first thing in that download page is likely to be a set of font types you can install to your computer. Go grab it when it’s available so you can see prettier websites.

I shall get back to work now and clear my piled-up tasks. Thanks for dropping by! Do let me know if there’s any issue on the layout, plugin, RSS feed, or in any other area. Have a good day!

New Host

This blog has been experiencing technical glitches since late 2008. The problems didn’t get any better and the entire site came into a complete halt in December. Thus, I decided to get a new web hosting service which hopefully hosts my site more reliably.

You can now reach this blog from http://chrisprasojo.com or http://chrispra.com

The latter one is a new domain name that I got together with my new hosting service. I think it’s easier to remember and less likely to be misspelled.

Mind the Dust

Blog’s theme is set to WordPress’ default until I have some spare time to tweak the layout. Enjoy the original taste of WordPress! hahaa…

I have updated RSS feeds of this blog but haven’t had a chance to test it. Do let me know if you’re reading from web browser and don’t get your RSS subscription updated.

One of my favorite doodles — and my mostly doodled — in the past few weeks:

The Great Global Warming Swindle

The following movie, titled The Great Global Warming Swindle, is a well compiled ideas from various sources contradicting the popular Inconvenient Truth. This movie was screened in one of my GE3223 Environmental Change In The Tropics lecture, one way to stimulate critical thinking of Geography students I guess. Haha

Aside from that, my days are… hmpf… just like that! I’ll try to write some ’bout it in this coming Christmas break — hopefully with a mood to write ’bout it…

There are moments where I just wanna run into the jungle and shout HOLY SHIT out loud!

Erm… Where to run into when there’s no jungle around, huh? Haha

Update: Angeline told me her bro found these two sites that debunk false information shown in the movie. The movie itself is a swindle!
