Island on Recycled Bottles

islandxt3 Island on Recycled Bottles

White sand… wooden chair… green foliage surrounding a modest hut… What a getaway! Here’s the same island captured from far.

Now what if you’re told that this island is owned by a man? No, he is not a tycoon who can afford ‘buying’ tiny islands. Nor an explorer who can discover an islet in the Pacific.

The man, Richie Sowa, built his own Spiral Island since 1998. He collected thousands of plastic bottles and built strong floating foundation for his own island. Cool!

If you can’t afford to buy your own tropical island paradise, why not build your own? That is exactly what Richie Sowa did back in 1998, from over a quarter-million plastic bottles. His Spiral Island sported a two-story house, solar oven, self-composting toilet and multiple beaches. Better yet, he has started building another one! His ultimate goal? To build the island bigger and bigger and finally float out to sea, traveling the world from the comfort of his own private paradise.

Sowa and his island were featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Here’s a YouTube copy of the TV show:

It’s a smart way to reuse unwanted plastic bottles which are deemed unprofitable to be recycled. Thumbs up to Richie Sowa! Visit his website to see the latest update.

Disaster

Recent disasters in various countries get violent more than ever and the environment is badly damaged. This reminds me of the inconvenient truth; you should read or watch it if you haven’t.

I hope these open everyone eyes and get them to act now for a greener earth.

Charge an iPod with an Onion

This is a very interesting video. I found this article and video from another website and there’s nobody else that I know, other than this video’s author, does charge his iPod successfully with an electrolytes-submerged onion. I won’t try this too on my iPod’s USB cable; Can’t imagine having onion layers stuffed beneath my USB plug and smells like onions. :S

It doesn’t take much to charge 15-20 minutes of your iPod; just two cups of Gatorade, an onion, and a screwdriver to make a hole through the onion to boost the chemical reaction process. Maybe our friends from School of Chemical and Life Sciences can explain us how an onion can provides electricity.

Oh yes, this electronion might be a new object in the center of attention for friends in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering who are hotly debating about green technology.

We don’t think much of ugly, power-sucking billboards, but this one from South Africa’s Eskom delivers its message.

Blog Action Day

Today is blog action day. Every fifteenth October bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind. The theme for this year is: the environment. Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic.

I believe everyone plays a big role in saving the environment and we should start the move in our daily life. There are many environment-friendly actions that you can apply to your daily life and they mean a lot for our mother earth, especially when many people do these together.

I found a great Facebook application named ‘I Am Green’. I added this application to my profile and populate it with many leaves which contribute a lot to the environment. I think you should try that too.

Besides being nice to our mother earth, taking green actions in our daily life brings many other positive things like:

  • Better health. Green movements encourage us to walk and cycle more instead of driving or riding motorcycles.
  • Less monthly bill. Optimizing air conditioner’s temperature and cleaning its filter, installing aerator on water tap, and many other useful tips will definitely reduce your utilities bill.
  • Higher personal savings. Carrying water bottle and refilling it saves a lot. How much dollars do you spend in a month buying drinks in can, plastic bottle, or plastic cups? Not to mention the waste we contribute to the landfill. How about buying used books to save the trees? Used books are also easy on our pocket
  • Good mood. With all those good things mentioned above, how can we not get a good mood? emoticon wink Blog Action Day
  • There are a lot more benefits you can get. Think about it..

If you have an account in Facebook, try the ‘I Am Green’ application. It has tons of useful and practical tips for a greener life. I have added and practiced more than 50 green actions in my daily life. How about you?
